FAQs
Dominion has a 33,000-acre service area in Northwest Douglas County. Dominion currently provides service to the community of Sterling Ranch
Dominion Service Area.jpgWholesale water providers operate and maintain a network of water infrastructure and are responsible for the sourcing and transportation of water supplies to water retailers, who then provide water directly to the end user. Wholesale water providers are not responsible for billing or customer service to residential customers; this is handled by a water retailer.
Dominion currently provides wholesale water to the Sterling Ranch Community Authority Board, which is about 3,400 acres of our service area.
We hope to provide renewable water to the communities of Louviers, Sedalia, Thunderbird and others within Dominion’s service area. To be considered for service, a community must meet Dominion’s rules and regulations.
main source of water in Douglas County is nonrenewable groundwater pumped from the Denver Basin Aquifer System.
Our approach is unique in that the majority of our water resources are not from groundwater, but instead, from renewable sources. We manage renewable surface water, including water stored in Chatfield Reservoir, and access groundwater supplies in Cherokee Ranch during times of drought. We are embarking on significant investments and regional partnerships to ensure sustainable, efficient, and effective use of water in our region.
Renewable water resources refer to water that is reused to the extent possible before the water is reintroduced to the environment. This includes capturing wastewater, stormwater, or graywater and cleaning it for other purposes, such as drinking, industrial processes, surface or ground water replenishment, and watershed restoration. Renewable water can help alleviate pressure on freshwater sources and natural systems.
We are taking steps to help the region shift from nonrenewable water sources in favor of more innovative approaches.
This includes:
• Collaborating with the regional water community to construct a water reclamation plant and water line connection to
store renewable water supplies in Chatfield Reservoir
• Developing a water efficiency plan to document best practices
• Partnering with our retail customers to ensure water use efficiency
• Provide accessible information related to our water supply
We look forward to continuing to lead in innovative ways to provide this community with safe, reliable utility services.
The Dominion Water & Sanitation District Board of Directors determines and approves wholesale water rates as part of their fiscal planning. Rate impacts depend on a retail water provider’s use of the water and regional system. Water rates paid by residents and businesses are determined by retail water providers.
Currently, wastewater is conveyed to South Platte Renew for treatment. We are working with Douglas County to construct a regional water reclamation facility. This facility will allow us to fully leverage existing water supplies and put that water to the highest beneficial use – reducing the need for additional water acquisition or reliance on groundwater.
We operate and maintain a water delivery system, which consists of approximately 93 miles of pipelines
(57.5 water, 35.5 wastewater), 4 related structures, and 1 major facility.
Through careful planning, we are advancing projects that will ensure they can meet current and future needs.
